The CSC strives to break down all racial and socioeconomic barriers to sailing and paddling through our LeaderSHIP program. There are many children who live less than a mile away from Lake Champlain but have never had the opportunity to access these activities. LeaderSHIP offers lake recreation opportunities to low income families and at-risk youth that build positive communication skills and self-esteem. Through our extensive scholarship program we can offer this experience to non-profit groups and individuals in the Burlington community.
LeaderSHIP participants learn to sail and paddle, to enjoy the lake and to read the subtle shifts of the wind. As youth embark on new adventures, they begin to see the Burlington waterfront from an entirely new perspective and to strengthen their relationship with Lake Champlain and with each other. During their time at the Community Sailing Center, LeaderSHIP participants connect to the natural environment and experience the relationship between life on water and life on land. As they explore the issues facing Lake Champlain and learn the basics of sailing and paddling, participants come together around shared goals and develop teamwork skills that can be used on and off the water. Youth from all conceivable backgrounds learn to put differences aside and work together to realize their dreams—big and small.
As a result of their engagement with the LeaderSHIP program youth often become stronger, more determined, and capable, applying these qualities to challenges in their everyday lives.
The Goals of the LeaderSHIP Program are to:
- Breakdown socio-economic and racial barriers.
- Build confidence and self-esteem.
- Develop a comfort with the aquatic environment.
- Expand opportunities for youth to recreate and connect with Lake Champlain.
- Foster a sense community and friendship through group activities and team-building challenges.
- Generate an interest in the sport of sailing and paddling, skills that can last a lifetime.
In 2011, we were able to offer the LeaderSHIP program to over 500 participants from 16 different community organizations.
2012 Program Dates:
Summer Sessions: June 18 – August 24

This is a very popular program at the CSC. Unfortunately, limited funding does require us to cap the number of annual participants. We urge you to inquire early in the season about community sailing opportunities.
