WAVES Initiative

Water. Access. Vitality. Education. Stewardship.

Creating future stewards of Lake Champlain

The health of Lake Champlain is an increasingly important issue for our community. The Community Sailing Center acknowledges that the water quality of Lake Champlain, Vermont’s greatest natural resource, is compromised and believes its improvement is vital our community and our sport. Recreation-based environmental education is one of the many mediums we utilize at the CSC to bridge people’s understanding of how they connect to Lake Champlain.

WAVES is an initiative for children and adults designed to enhance community member’s connection to the exciting ecosystems of Lake Champlain through interactive science lessons and water-based recreation. Hands-on learning paired with paddling or sailing engages people young and old while empowering them to become future stewards of Lake Champlain, improving its water quality by changing perceptions and behavior.

The goals of the WAVES initiative are:

  • To educate adults and youth about Lake Champlain ecology and our role within the lake environment throughout all our sailing courses and camps each summer.
  • To work with local schools in order to teach students about the importance of lake stewardship and ecology through hands-on environmental education lessons paired with on-water recreation.
  • To minimize our impact on the natural world by maintaining strong recycling efforts throughout the year and a compost system in the summer months.
  • To train the environmental educators of tomorrow through our internship program.
