Get excited for Sailing Season!

Our talented staff member Torrey Paquette put this small film together in anticipation of the upcoming season. It stars some of the 2008 staff and campers. Enjoy!

Youth Environmental Stewardship Program

Expand your Horizons.

The first step to improve the health of Lake Champlain and Vermont's natural environments is to better understand both the biological workings and the considerable pleasure they can give us through responsible recreation. We have created a new youth education program to make that connection.

The new Youth Environmental Stewardship Program will develop the future stewards of the Lake. This innovative environmental education program is designed to get elementary and middle school aged children outside and on the lake after school! Y.E.S. an outside, on the water learning experience for all students involved! We will discover new and exciting ecosystems on and around Lake Champlain and what role as humans we have in them. It provides students with an introduction to watersheds, water quality, weather, and human impact through hands on learning and on the water activities.

Youth Environment Stewardship Program starts May 5th.

For more information about this program, please contact Jen Guimaraes, Education Director at 802.864.2499

Enroll in one of our courses.

Sailing Basics
This 15-hour course includes a introduction to sailing, nomenclature, wind awareness, weather, rigging, points of sail, tacking and jibing, docking, mooring, and general boating safety. At the completion of the course, you will receive a US Sailing Small Boat Certification that allows you to rent a boat from our facility.

This 6-hour course is designed to expand on the skills learned in the Sailing Basics Course. It introduces new topics as controlling sail shape, heavy air sailing, aids to navigation, docking and mooring.

Private Lessons
Learn to sail one-on-one or explore your new sailboat with a certified instructor. Lessons can be given in the student's boat or in the Community Sailing Center's boat. Reservations need to be made at least 48 hours in advance.

Learn to sail as a family
Each family's experience will be unique. We will identify each family's goals and needs and plan accordingly. Courses will cover all aspects of basic sailing and safety. All classes have one goal: you will come together to learn how to sail as a family. Families will learn to sail in Sonars or Rhodes 19s.

Courses start June 6th.

2009 Youth Sailing Camps

Spaces still available!

Our full day, week long Sailing Camps are a great way to be introduced to joys of sailing, meet new friends, expand your skills and have a blast on the Lake. We offer Sailing Camp to age groups: 8-10 year olds and 11-15 year olds.

Level I
Campers will learn the basics of rigging, points of sail, sailing maneuvers, safety and recovery in a safe fun environment. Certified Instructors lead a variety of land and water based activities designed to promote comfort and independence in the boat. Sailors will receive US SAILING Little Red Sailing Certification Books at the completion of the course

Level II
This camp is a perfect follow up to the Level I or for sailors who are already comfortable with the basics. There will be a review of nomenclature and basic rigging, safety and sailing maneuvers then it is onto on the water activities that consolidate skills, as well as teach new ones including longer sails around Burlington Bay.

Level III
The best way to advance your boat-handling skills is to learn from others. This camp will refine the sailor's on-the-water skills, boat handling skills and introduce advanced equipment. Campers will also learn beginning racing skills including starts, tactical tips, and winning strategies. **This camp runs for two weeks, Monday - Friday**

If financial obligations preclude your family's ability to participate in any of our programs please contact Kate Neubauer, Executive Director for information about the McConnell Scholarship Fund.
