WAVES Iniative

Water. Access. Vitality. Education. Stewardship.

We have formed many exciting new partnerships to assist us in our WAVES Initiative. Each month we will be highlighting one of our new partners!

Conservation Law Foundation is New England’s leading environmental advocacy organization. In 2001, CLF established the Lake Champlain Lakekeeper Program to protect the lake through a combination of public advocacy, legal action and old-fashioned detective work. The Lakekeeper involves concerned citizens in restoring and protecting Lake Champlain.

The Sailing Center is thrilled to be involved with the current Lakekeeper, Mike Rapacz. Through our new partnership we will be hosting a variety of speakers for our youth camps throughout the summer. We will also be having an adult speaker series in July and August in order to offer more information on the current state of the lake as well as what can be done to contribute to its preservation and the conservation of the species that live in and around it. Make sure to check the website at the end of the month to see who will be featured in our July speaker series!

New Education Programs

Get Involved!

This spring students from the St. Paul Catholic School traveled from Barton, VT to learn more about the relationship between physics and sailing a boat. After building small rockets in the classroom and discovering Bernoulli’s theory they were able to see sailing in a whole new light. Following a short classroom session they headed out on our keelboats to discuss sail shape, lift, and pressure all while enjoying the scenic views of the Adirondacks and Burlington Bay.

We are looking forward to our next new season this fall and hoping to encourage more schools to schedule a weekly gym class or afterschool enrichment course like those students from the Northfield High School. Enthusiastic sailors commuted from Northfield, VT for five weeks to participate in a sailing course down here at the Sailing Center! Despite the variety of weather that they faced they still had a great time learning to sail keelboats and dingy boats.

The sky is the limit on programs at the Sailing Center! If you have any questions or are interested in creating a program for your school or organization please contact, Jen Guimaraes, Education Director.

Adaptive Watersports Program

Leave your dependence on the dock.

For the past 10 years, the Community Sailing Center has partnered with Vermont Adaptive Ski & Sports to provide access to Lake Champlain for people with physical and/or cognitive disabilities. This summer programs are offered seven days a week for both groups and individuals. People with visual or mobility disabilities can sign up for private lessons on our Martin 16, which can be sailed completely from the cockpit. We also have opportunities on our adaptive 24 foot Sonar for up to six people in a group. For more information on these programs contact the program coordinator, Dave D'Angelo at truenorth@vermontadaptive.org or (802) 353-3178.
