Reflections on the Fall Programs
By Jen Guirmares, Education Director
There have been several new additions to our fall programs this year, we worked with many new organizations: The Community High School of Vermont and the Hullcrest School are two that stand out in particular. Both of these programs were five-week sailing courses that offered students in the Burlington community school credit. Over the course of these five weeks, you can really see the transformation these students go through.
“The leadership of your staff has rubbed off on our students and opened their eyes to a whole different world,” said Dan King, the teacher liaison for the Community High School of Vermont.
The students in his program have been familiar with the waterfront for a long time, however, they never knew how easy it could be to hop on a sailboat and get out on the lake. There is a sense of pride that comes from seeing a group of 18-28 year-olds out on the water, learning to sail for the first time. Young children often shy away from a sailboat when the wind exceeds10 miles per hour, but when the wind is gusting up to 22 knots, it’s not unusual for a student in their mid-twenties to exclaim, “I wasn’t going to come sail today, but I saw all that wind and had to come down!”

Sail Fast!
The Catamounts have exploded into the 2009 Fall Season with top finishes at several major events. Quickly rising to 10th in the September 24th National Rankings, the Cats were 2nd at the Harry Anderson Trophy at Yale and 6th at the Hatch Brown Trophy at MIT. This top level performance comes amongst a slew of top finishes at varsity and junior-varsity events, and the Cats have a huge freshmen class that is actively racing every weekend. As October begins, the Catamounts eye a berth at the Atlantic Coast Championship, but will have to sail well at Halloween's Schell Regatta at MIT to get there.

The Community Sailing Center is home to sail and human powered boats of all kinds and sizes. We are especially well suited to house: kayaks/canoes, rowing dinghies, Lasers, Sunfish, and boats 12-24′ on trailers.
Those who store their boats with us are given:
- the combination to the gate locks which allows for 24 hour access to the boat park
- use of dollies for ease in launching
- the option of purchasing a hoist pass for unlimited hoist usage
Boats may be stored on racks, trailers or tires in the boat park.
Space is filling up! Call the Sailing Center at 802.864.2499 to register your boat or kayak.

This past week has been wet and windy. Last weekend I went with a couple of the sailors to the Blue Wave invitational hosted by SailMaine on the Casco Bay. When we first got to the venue there was little to no wind. The facility there is remarkably similar to our own. They are located in an old industrial area right next to the railroad. As forecasted, the breeze did eventually fill in from the south and increased steadily throughout the day. There were a total of six races for each fleet (A and B fleets). The highlights for the day were definitely Gabe Mantegna and Jen Dunn overcoming a difficult series of capsizes to then make it back out for the second race of that set with no further problems. Finally in the last race of the day turned out to be our best result for the regatta (sailed by Sam Barrenger). Overall everyone had a great time and improved on their sail skills.
The Community Sailing Center encourages and celebrates the responsible use
and long term stewardship of Lake Champlain by fostering educational
and recreational opportunities for all members of our community.
