Frequently Asked Questions:

What is the Community Sailing Center?

The Community Sailing Center is the only organization providing everyone educational and recreational access to Lake Champlain. Through human-powered boating, valuable life lessons and a passion for Lake stewardship are shared with children, adults, at-risk youth, people with disabilities and others, regardless of the ability to pay. Camps, instruction, rentals, storage, racing and volunteer opportunities are also available.

What is the WAVES initiative and why is it important?

WAVES is about Water. Access. Vitality. Education. Stewardship.

The health of Lake Champlain is an increasingly important issue for the community over the last decades. The Community Sailing Center acknowledges that the water quality of Lake Champlain, Vermont’s greatest natural resource, is compromised and its improvement is vital to the community and organization. Recreation-based environmental education is one of the many opportunities available to bridge people’s understanding of their personal impacts to the Lake’s health.

The Community Sailing Center has launched a new experiential learning initiative for children and adults to enhance their connection to Lake Champlain. The WAVES initiative informs youth and adults alike about the exciting ecosystems of the Lake Champlain Basin through interactive science lessons and recreation on the Lake. This type of hands-on learning and on-the-water activity will engage and empower people to become future stewards of Lake Champlain, improving its water quality by changing perceptions and behavior.

What is Stand Up Paddleboarding?

Stand up Paddleboarding (SUP), is an emerging global sport with a Hawaiian heritage. The sport is an ancient form of surfing. SUP’ing is popular at warm coastal climates and resorts, and is gaining in popularity as celebrities are sampling the sport, and cross-over athletes are training with SUP.
