Community Sailing Center Celebrates 15th Anniversary

Burlington, VT – Look at almost any promotional piece for the city of Burlington and what do you likely see? A view of Lake Champlain, sailboats with the mountains in the background.

But talk to the individual on the sailboat in the picture and you’ll understand the irony — for all the promotional photos of sailboats on the water, very few local people have actually been on a sailboat on Lake Champlain.

The Community Sailing Center is changing that. Since 1994, The Community Sailing Center has been connecting the community to Lake Champlain.  It is only organization on Lake Champlain dedicated to encouraging and celebrating the responsible use and long-term stewardship of the lake by fostering education and recreation.

Starting as a small community center focused primarily on offering summer sailing programs and safe public access to the Lake, the Community Sailing Center has seen growth every year in terms of user visits, program development, partnerships and boat fleets. It has transformed itself into a waterfront community center that is the committed to providing access to the lake for everyone, regardless of age, ability or income.

“We continue to see steady interest in our recreation and education programs despite the constant barrage of economic bad news,” reports Kate Neubauer, Executive Director. “We are way ahead of last year in number of people registering for courses and camps, and our inquiries are up 31% year to date over same period last year.” She attributes this to the fact that people are choosing opportunities where their time is spent participating in a rewarding activity that gives them a lifelong skill. “There is no better way to clear your head, reduce your carbon footprint and rethink the future, than the time you spend recreating on the lake,” she explains.

The Community Sailing Center offers programming for ages 6 to over 90 years old. It also collaborates with numerous non-profit organizations, municipalities, schools, volunteers and local citizens to provide programs and services.

The 15th anniversary season begins this Saturday, May 24th..

The Community Sailing Center is a community based 501(c) (3) organization that encourages and celebrates the responsible use and long-term stewardship of Lake Champlain by fostering educational and recreational opportunities for all members of our community.
