Community Sailing Center Prepares for an Action Packed Season
Burlington, VT – Community Sailing Center’s summer camp programs started this week with lots of young children excited to play on Lake Champlain. Cuurently, the number of camp registrations have already exceeded number of children served in 2008.
Each week through out the summer the Community Sailing Center provides programs for children ages 6-15 years old. The campers are taught how to sail in 420s, Hobies, Escapes and Open Bics. They are instructed in water safety, marine terms, craft handling and seamanship.
In addition, the Community Sailing Center’s new WAVES initiative incorporates ecological and lake conservation component into all center curriculum. The WAVES initiative is designed to ensure not only recreation on, but conservation of Lake Champlain and other waterways by educating our youngest community members now so they can grow and mature with this knowledge and become stewards of the lake themselves in years to come.
Campers don’t need to have any previous knowledge or experience in sailing, the instructors teach everything you need to know to sail on Lake Champlain. Seamus Stein, a first year campers with cerebral palsy is having a great time this week at camp. ” As soon as Seamus sits in the car each day after camp he has so many wonderful things to say about camp. He loves learning the terms and can explain them! He was so excited to sail yesterday and was able to share how he used the tiller and that he tacked.” says Kate Stein, his mother.
In addition to full day Sailing Camps, the Community Sailing Center offers multi-activity camps, adult instruction, boat/kayak storage and rentals, racing and volunteer opportunities. All programs are available to everyone regardless of age, ability or income; thousands of at-risk or disadvantaged youth, people with disabilities and others have already been served through partnerships with area non-profit organizations.
The Community Sailing Center is a community based 501(c) (3) organization that encourages and celebrates the responsible use and long-term stewardship of Lake Champlain by fostering educational and recreational opportunities for all members of our community.
