
The Flood
This spring, we’ve been reminded of the incredible impact Lake Champlain has on our community. The flood has taken a toll on so many families and businesses and it’s times like this that remind us how incredibly important lake access is and just how strong a community we are. Here’s a condensed look at the flood and its impact on our region.
April 2011 – Record rainfall combined with snowmelt floods rivers and flows to lake
April 28 – Flood begins to force road closures in Champlain Islands and Addison and Franklin Counties
May 5 – Sailing Center evacuates flooded office, finds higher ground in Maltex Buidling
May 6 – Lake level reaches 103.2 feet above sea level, a new flood record
May 6 – Governor declares state of emergency
May 10 – Disaster specialists from FEMA visit Vermont to assess flood impact
May 24 – KeyBank volunteers spend Neighbors Make the Difference Day helping Sailing Center
May 27 – Storms force Montpelier to evacuate due to river flash flooding
May 28 – 75 community members assist with clean up at the CSC Staying Afloat Volunteer Day
May 30 – Burlington-Port Kent ferry delays opening due to flooded access roads
June 10 – State Officials declare bacteria levels in Lake Champlain are within safe limits for swimming
June 13 – Sailing Center announces its July 4 opening date
